In Vivo Strain Measurement

Using medical imaging data to design better implants is passion for me.  On the left is an image from a paper I published with my colleagues from Cardiac Dimensions involving their Carrilon II implant for treating mitral valve disease.

We used medical imaging data—bi-plane cineflouroscopy—to reconstruct the implant geometry and motion of their device in vivo.  The data was useful for determining appropriate boundary conditions in vivo.  You can download our paper In Vivo Strain Estimates for Medical Implants published in ASTM 1559 STP Fatigue and Fracture of Medical Metallic Materials and Devices, Volume 3.
